50 years before Philoponus, two Christians from Gaza, seeking to influence Alexandrian Christians, defended the Christian belief in resurrection and the finite duration of the world, and attacked rival Neoplatonist views. Aeneas addresses an unusual version of the food chain argument against resurrection, that our bodies will get eaten by other creatures. Zacharias attacks the Platonist examples of synchronous creation, which were the production of light, of shadow, and of a footprint in the sand. A fragment survives of a third Gazan contribution by Procopius. Zacharias lampoons the Neoplatonist professor in Alexandria, Ammonius, and claims a leading role in the riot which led to the cleverest Neoplatonist, Damascius, fleeing to Athens. It was only Philoponus, however, who was able to embarrass the Neoplatonists by arguing against them on their own terms.

La parution de la traduction de l'ouvrage de Teresa Obolevitch sur la philosophie religieuse russe est bienvenue dans le paysage culturel français. Elle vient s'insérer dans une série de publications qui, en France, depuis environ deux décennies, ont été consacrées à la philosophie russe et ont fait évoluer l'image que les Français se faisaient de la nature et de l'évolution de ce domaine du savoir en Russie. Et ce n'est pas le moindre mérite de Teresa Obolevitch que d'avoir montré ici comment, dans ce vaste paysage de la philosophie actuelle en Russie, la philosophie religieuse russe avait encore et réellement sa place. C'est toute l'histoire de cette pensée qui, par son ancrage dans la religion orthodoxe et la tradition byzantine, a permis de faire apparaître l'un des courants les plus importants de la philosophie russe, celui précisément de la philosophie religieuse. Ici, les délimitations géographiques ne sont plus pertinentes, ce sont les spécificités culturelles qui priment ainsi que les empreintes dont elles marquent les œuvres. Nous avons affaire autant à certains philosophes qui ont vécu et sont morts, parfois de façon tragique, en Russie ou en Union soviétique (Vladimir Soloviev, Alekseï Losev, Pavel Florensky) qu'à d'autres qui ont émigré et ont réalisé une grande partie de leur oeuvre dans l'émigration (Nicolas Losski, Nicolas Berdiaev, Simon Frank, Serge Boulgakov). L'important, en temps de péril, n'est pas le lieu, mais l'héritage, le témoignage ou le message, tant il est vrai que dans son ouvrage, l'auteur cherche à montrer comment, dans le contexte d'une histoire culturelle millénaire et chrétienne, la fréquentation séculaire de la théologie et de la philosophie a pu faire surgir, tout d'abord en certains lieux et selon certains modes privilégiés, des thèmes aptes à nourrir encore la pensée contemporaine

When it appeared in 1670, Baruch Spinoza's Theological-Political Treatise was denounced as the most dangerous book ever published--"godless," "full of abominations," "a book forged in hell . . . by the devil himself." Boethius gehört zu den herausragenden Denkern der spätantiken Geistesgeschichte. Anders, als man vielleicht meinen würde, ist diese Sicht auf Boethius in der Forschung allerdings nicht unumstritten und verhältnismäßig neu. Sie lässt eine Tendenz zur Neubewertung erkennen, die nicht nur Boethius, sondern auch das Denken seiner Zeit immer mehr in seiner Eigenständigkeit zu würdigen beginnt. So werden Boethius wie auch die Spätantike immer weniger nur als Instanzen der Vermittlung klassisch antiken Wissens in das christliche Mittelalter angesehen. Worin aber besteht die Originalität des Boethius und des durch ihn wesentlich geprägten spätantiken Denkens? Kann die Spätantike als eine eigene geistesgeschichtliche Epoche betrachtet werden?
